Umbrella Corp-style Subterranean City may be Mankind’s only hope

The Above Below project SOUNDS like a fine idea, but let’s do the world a favor and keep an eye out for red-and-white striped shield icons and any reference to a “T-Virus”.

Proposed by Matthew Fromboluti of Washington University, Above Below is an inverted skyscraper concept that would fill in a 900-foot deep, 300-acre wide crater in Arizona, the former location of the Lavender Pit Mine outside of Bisbee.

The resultant self-sufficient underground city would be capable of creating its own food and energy as well as providing a climate-controlled environment smack-dab in the middle of the desert. With a protecting dome overhead followed by lush growing terraces, the city would function as a solar chimney. Add working, living and recreational real estate, and there you have it… an Umbrella Corp city a self-sustaining conclave.

Sounds like the perfect place to re-start civilization after the Final Big One, doesn’t it?
